Allahabad, March 20: Since childhood we could see the little birds hopping around chirping on the roof and nearby areas but now there is no such a scene since few years. It is because their numbers had dwindled due to various reasons. It is the same reason that district administration has taken the step ahead to protect the lives of these birds, the house sparrows, said Allahabad District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar.

He pointed out that with help from forest department on occasion of World Sparrow Day, awareness campaign has been launched. Under this series, in the town at 100 different places the next box and water points (utensils for storing water for the birds) would be installed. Additional to it many activities would be organised to motivate the residents to take up the cause in large number.

Signature campaign to be launched

Allahabad district administration had started Sparrow conservation awareness drive to mark the World Sparrow Day. It was reported that from Saturday at Minto Park signature campaign was launched in which large number of people participated. The people were motivated to install the next box and water pots at around 100 points including parks and gardens. On Friday, at Allahabad University a seminar and signature campaign was held.
On Sunday at Minto Park slogan and painting competition has been scheduled. Under this series, DM Sanjay Kumar called on Allahabad High Court Chief Justice D B Bhosale, Justice Dilip Gupta and Justice A K Mishra and presented them a nest box.

District forest officer stated that appeal is being made to public to install nest box and water pots. He added that if the school-colleges want to participate in the event, they can get in touch with forest department.
DM said that children would be given away prizes for slogan and painting competition. He said that people should come forward to provide foodgrains and water to the birds. The drive would continue for year round and cooperation would be taken from Non-government organisations, for holding door to door campaign to create awareness.
