Re-captured town of Palmyra from IS militants, says Syrian military

In Syria, military says, it had re-captured the town of Palmyra from Islamic State (IS) militants for the second time in a year.
A statement from the army said the government is in control of the whole city. State news agency SANA said the army with the support of Syrian and Russian Airforce and other pro-government forces have entered deep into the city and inflicted heavy losses on IS militants.
Syria’s Ambassador to the United Nations Bashar al-Jaafari said the city had been liberated from the hands of the terrorist organisation. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, also confirmed the re-capture of Palmyra from the militants. IS fighters were driven out in March last year, but managed to retake the city, its world famous ruins and the surrounding area in December.
IS held the ruins and the nearby city for 10 months after seizing it for the first time in May 2015. It blew up temples, burial towers and the Arch of Triumph believing the shrines and statues to be idolatrous. The jihadists also destroyed the 2,000 year old Temple of Bel, the great sanctuary of the Palmyrene gods.
