Sri Lankan Navy apprehends 24 fishermen from TN
Sri Lankan Navy apprehended 24 fishermen from Tamil Nadu last night when they were fishing near Kachatheevu. The fishermen were taken to Kankesanthurai Mannar for questioning and will be produced before local courts tomorrow.
The Lankan Navy after apprehended twenty four fishermen from Ramnathapuram and Pudukottai districts late last night. Four boats of the fishermen were also detained. Local fishermen are urging the central government to intervene and secure the release of 61 fishermen from Tamil Nadu already languishing in Lankan jail.
Tamil Nadu chief Minister Edapady K Palanisamy urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to secure the release of Tamil Nadu fishermen and their 128 fishing boats. Sri Lanka is expected to release Tamil Nadu fishermen on humanitarian grounds before Kachatheevu St Antony’s Church festival as goodwill gesture.
