Droupadi Murmu (64), a tribal Leader and former Governor of Jharkhand, has been selected by the BJP-led NDA as India’s next President.
PM Modi tweeted Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji has devoted her life to serving society and empowering the poor, downtrodden as well as the marginalised. She has rich administrative experience and had an outstanding gubernatorial tenure. I am confident she will be a great President of our nation.
Naveen Patnaik, the Chief Minister of Odisha, stated, “Draupadi Murmu’s nomination as the NDA’s Presidential candidate is a proud occasion for Odisha. When PM Modi discussed this with me, I was ecstatic.”
Patnaik remarked, “She will set a brilliant example for women empowerment in the country.”
JP Nadda, the BJP’s national president, made the statement following the party’s parliamentary gathering in Delhi, which was attended by Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other dignitaries.
If Murmu, a former governor of Jharkhand, is elected, she will be the first indigenous woman to hold the highest constitutional position, which is a strong possibility given the BJP-led NDA’s numerical advantage.
If elected, she will be the first female President of India and the first from the state of Odisha.
The Opposition had picked former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha as its presidential candidate earlier in the day.
JP Nadda, who announced the NDA’s presidential candidate, stated that after the BJP’s parliamentary board debated 20 candidates for a presidential nominee, it was agreed to choose someone from east India, a tribal, and a woman.
According to Nadda, the BJP is attempting to reach an agreement with all parties.
“Following the announcement of the opposition parties’ candidates, the BJP decided to run Murmu for President after consulting with all of the NDA’s allies. A consensus was reached after detailed deliberations on 20 names, with the conclusion that the President of India should come from the East and from the tribal group. The Parliamentary board agreed to name Droupadi Murmu as the Presidential candidate after much deliberation “Nadda said.
June 29 is the last date for filing nomination for the Presidential poll, while voting will take place on July 18. The counting of votes will take place on July 21.
