A Boston-based Indian American man has been apprehended and charged for reportedly engaging in indecent behaviour on a flight from Honolulu to Boston in May 2022. The suspect, identified as Dr. Sudipta Mohanty, 33, allegedly masturbated and exposed himself while seated next to a 14-year-old female passenger.
Dr. Mohanty, an internal medicine and primary care doctor in Boston, has been charged with one count of lewd, indecent, and obscene acts while within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States. According to authorities, the incident occurred during the flight, and the minor immediately informed her family upon landing in Boston.
The accused was accompanied by a female companion on the Hawaiian Airlines flight. Allegedly seated beside the 14-year-old Indian American passenger and her grandparents, Dr. Mohanty’s inappropriate conduct was witnessed by the minor, who subsequently moved to a different seat.
“The alleged behaviour in front of a minor is utterly reprehensible,” stated Christopher DiMenna, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI, Boston Division. He emphasized the seriousness with which crimes aboard aircraft are taken and encouraged reporting of such incidents.
The charge of lewd, indecent, and obscene acts within the special aircraft jurisdiction carries potential penalties of up to 90 days in prison, one year of supervised release, and a fine of up to $5,000.
Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua S. Levy and FBI Acting SAC Christopher DiMenna urged anyone who encounters or witnesses similar incidents to immediately report them to both the flight crew and the FBI.
