Jodhpur remains tense after violence on Eid, According to the police, a curfew was imposed in sections of Rajasthan’s Jodhpur on Tuesday following violence between two communities on Eid and the previous night over a flag issue in the Jalori Gate area.
On Tuesday, stone-throwing and other forms of violence were recorded in many localities before police used force to bring the situation under control. The surroundings, on the other hand, are still tense.
According to the police control room, the curfew has been enforced till midnight tomorrow in the following police stations: Udai Mandir, Nagori Gate, Khanda Phalsa, Pratap Nagar, Dev Nagar, Soor Sagar, and Sardarpura.
In Jodhpur, internet services were shut down to prevent rumours from spreading, and the Eid namaz was held under police protection. Jodhpur’s Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot, appealed to the people to keep the peace. He convened a high-level conference to discuss the issue and dispatched senior officials via helicopter to Jodhpur.
In Jodhpur, a three-day Parshuram Jayanti festival is underway, and religious flags raised by both communities sparked a major debate that escalated into fights. On Monday night, police used tear gas and sticks to disperse a crowd that had also attacked a local police station. In the early hours of Tuesday, at least five police officers were hurt by stone-throwing.
The riots are the most recent in a wave of communal violence and hostility that has swept the country, fueled in part by hate-filled comments from religious and political figures.
As India marked Ram Navami, Hanuman Jayanti, and Ramadan, such conflicts occurred in at least five states: Delhi, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
“Putting an Islamic flag on the statue of freedom fighter Balmukund Bissa by anti-social forces and removing the saffron flag put up on Parshuram Jayanti is condemnable,” BJP state president Satish Poonia said. He urged people to keep the peace and demanded that the state government establish “rule of law.”
