On Monday, Prime Minister Modi congratulated Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, 70, on his election, saying that India seeks peace and security in a terror-free area so that “we can focus on our development concerns and ensure the well-being and prosperity of our people.”

Sharif mentioned the topic of Article 370 abrogation in Kashmir in his inaugural speech on Monday, claiming that the people in the Valley were bleeding and that Pakistan will provide them with “diplomatic and spiritual support” in addition to addressing the issue at all international forum.

Following a stormy political battle, Sharif took over from Imran Khan and stated that he wished good relations with India, but that this would be impossible without addressing the Kashmir problem. Sharif was sworn in as 23rd Prime Minister on Monday. He is the younger brother of former three-term Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

India announced the withdrawal of special powers from Jammu and Kashmir and the split of the state into two union territories in August 2019, escalating tensions between the two countries. In 2019, India’s intention to end the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, which downgraded diplomatic ties and fired the Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad.

India has stated that it wants regular neighbourly ties with Pakistan in a free of terror, animosity, and violence environment. According to India, it is Pakistan’s responsibility to establish an environment free of terror and animosity.
