PT Usha Among 4 Nominated to Rajya Sabha; PM Congratulates, After the illustrious sprinter was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi showered PT Usha with compliments. The Indian Prime Minister posted a special message on Twitter to celebrate the nomination of the newly appointed Rajya Sabha candidate. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi praised the legendary Olympic track and field athlete as an inspiration for all Indians.

“The remarkable PT Usha Ji is an inspiration for every Indian. Her accomplishments in sports are widely known but equally commendable is her work to mentor budding athletes over the last several years. Congratulations to her on being nominated to the Rajya Sabha. @PTUshaOfficial,” PM Modi said in his tweet. Legendary athlete Usha and music maestro Ilaiyaraaja are two of the prominent personalities nominated to Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

The four Rajya Sabha nominees are all from southern states, incidentally. While Prasad is from Andhra Pradesh, Usha is from Kerala, Ilaiyaraaja is from Tamil Nadu, Heggade is from Karnataka, and Ilaiyaraaja is from Tamil Nadu.

According to official sources, the Rajya Sabha nominations are another example of how the Narendra Modi-led administration honours deserving Indians who have distinguished themselves in a variety of sectors.

The four nominees have distinguished careers in their industries and have won awards on a national and international scale for their achievements.

One of India’s most well-known athletes, Usha was born in a tiny town in the Keralan district of Kozhikode. For thousands of young girls around the nation who wanted to pursue a career in athletics, particularly track and field events, she has served as an inspiration and role model.

Usha, also known as the “Payyoli Express,” has represented her nation with medals at a number of international athletic competitions, including the Asian Games, the Asian Championships, and the World Junior Invitational Meet. Throughout her career, she has broken and set a number of national and Asian records.

She finished fourth in the women’s 400-meter race at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, just missing out on India’s first medal in a track and field competition.

Post-retirement, she started the Usha School of Athletics, which offers world-class facilities to talented youngsters. Usha is a recipient of the Arjuna award and the Padma Shri.

To educate rural youth about self-employment options and provide training, he founded the Rural Development and Self-employment Training Institute (RDSETI).

The Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project, a project for inclusive rural development and self-employment in Karnataka, was similarly conceptualized by Heggade. The project currently has more than 6 lakh SHGs and more than 49 lakh members.

Additionally, he is the chairman of the Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara Educational Trust, which manages more than 25 schools and institutions and offers an excellent education at a reasonable cost. In 2015, he received the Padma Vibhushan.
