On Saturday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi abandoned his official bungalow in Lutyens’ Delhi and relocated to his mother Sonia Gandhi’s home, weeks after losing his Lok Sabha membership due to his conviction in a defamation case.

On social media, the party also started a “MeraGharAapkaGhar” campaign in which party leaders offered their homes to Gandhi.

Saturday morning, Gandhi packed his stuff and left his 12-Tughlaq Lane home, where he had lived for for two decades. Gandhi, his mother Sonia Gandhi, and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra paid a morning visit to the mansion. He handed over the keys to the abandoned house to Central Public Works Department officials.

Following his disqualification from the Lok Sabha, the Lok Sabha Secretariat served him with a notice to vacate the residence by April 22. In a defamation lawsuit over his Modi surname statements made in Kolar, Karnataka, in 2019, the former Congress head was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison by a Surat court. Rahul Gandhi moved into his mother Sonia Gandhi’s 10, Janpath flat.

Following the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri, the home was given to Union Ministers such as Rabri Devi and KK Tiwari. It is one of the largest mansions among politicians, even larger than the Prime Minister’s official residence at 7 Race Course Road. Even after Sonia Gandhi’s death, the bungalow remains Sonia Gandhi’s home address.
