The Bruins are defeated 2-0 by the Hurricanes, who have three takeaways.
In Game 2 against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Bruins came out with a spring in their step. On their initial effort for a potential building block, their power play drew a few glances. Following Antti Raanta’s withdrawal due to a David Pastrnak collision, Pytor Kochetkov made his first career playoff appearance.
The undisciplined Bruins, on the other hand, didn’t put Kochetkov to the test until they were desperate. Midway through the first period, they started a night of self-destruction.
In the first period, the Bruins had a lot of trouble clearing the puck out of their defensive end. Jesper Fast and Sebastian Aho scored 2:27 apart for a 2-0 lead after the Hurricanes capitalized on errors and tips.
Then the fines began to mount. The visiting penalty box resembled a clown car circus act for the whole of the middle stanza. The self-inflicted extra damage with irresponsible moments like Trent Frederic committing an interference minor or Brad Marchand engaging in a slash war with Kochetkov at every moment of pushback, such as replying to Andrei Svechnikov’s hit on Hampus Lindholm.
The Bruins couldn’t stay together despite Patrice Bergeron’s two power-play goals. In the second, Aho’s second of the night and Neidereitter’s 5-on-3 goal with 1:07 left in the middle stanza gave the Canes man-advantage goals. With less than a minute remaining, Niederreiter scored an empty-netter to give Carolina a 5-2 victory.
The Bruins didn’t get much help from the officiating, which was inconsistent in three 5-on-3 situations. Regardless, they were doomed from the start. For the first time since the 2011 Stanley Cup Final, they are presently behind 2-0 in the series. Zdeno Chara, David Krejci, Tim Thomas, and Milan Lucic, for example, aren’t going through that door.
