UConn is the most successful Final Four team, having won the championship 11 times since the women’s tournament began in 1982. In reality, the Huskies won four consecutive games between 2013 and 2016.
The tournament was last won by South Carolina in 2017, and the reigning champions were Stanford, who defeated Arizona 54-53 in 2021.
The NCAA is breaking precedent by allowing “March Madness” to be used for the women’s basketball championship for the first time. Previously, the NCAA used the slogan and branding only for men’s basketball.
In September, the NCAA stated that the move will take effect in 2022, citing a “full external evaluation of gender equity concerns in connection with the NCAA championships” as the reason for the decision.
In a statement at the time, Lynn Holzman, vice president of women’s basketball, said, “Women’s basketball has developed greatly over the past several years, and we remain focused on our mission of developing and growing the game.” “As we continue to seek to elevate the women’s basketball championship, the brand recognition that March Madness carries will increase marketing opportunities.”
The Connecticut Huskies will compete for the national championship against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
