Union minister Sonowal to visit Chabahar port

Union ports, shipping & waterways and Ayush minister Sarbananda Sonowal embarked on an official visit to Iran and the United Arab Emirates on 18 August, during which he will pay a visit to Shahid Beheshti port of Chabahar (in Iran).Mentionable is that
Chabahar port is India’s first overseas port project and it emerges as a project of national importance.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there were fewer visits from India to Iran and vice-versa. Sonowal’s visit is expected to strengthen ties and maritime relationship between the two nations. It will also highlight the importance of Chabahar as a gateway for Indian trade
with Europe, Russia and CIS countries.

Additionally Sonowal will take part in bilateral meetings with the concerned ministers of the Islamic Republic of Iran. A memorandum of understanding between New Delhi and Tehran concerning mutual recognition of seafarer’s certificates of competency in unlimited voyages is also proposed to be signed.

During this visit, Sonowal is meeting the Ambassadors of CIS countries based in the Iranian capital city. He will also visit Jebel Ali port in UAE and meet the India diaspora there. A number of meetings with the heads of shipping/freight companies in the UAE will also be
attended by the visiting minister.
