On Sunday, Pakistan’s former President Pervez Musharraf died in a hospital in Dubai February 5. The 79-year-old was being treated for a serious ailment.
Musharraf, a four-star general in the Pakistan Army, seized power in 1999 through a bloodless military coup. He served as Pakistan’s 10th president for nearly a decade before resigning in 2008 to prevent being impeached by the ruling coalition. Soon after, Musharraf went into self-imposed exile in London, and then to Dubai.
The former president’s presidency was tarnished by numerous controversies and gaffes. From being accused of human rights violations to facing charges for the killing of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007, Musharraf’s legacy is fraught with controversy.
In India, he may be best remembered for his role in the Kargil War of 1999. Musharraf, as Chief of the Pakistan Army, planned and carried out the invasion by sending Pakistani intruders into India. However, he suffered a disastrous military loss when India pushed back the Pakistanis and beat them after a three-month war.
