After being returned to detention and ordered released, Telangana BJP MLA T Raja Singh was given bail shortly after his arrest.
Raja Singh, a BJP lawmaker from Goshamahal, was the subject of a FIR filed by the Telangana Police for allegedly making derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad. He was later detained. This action was taken in response to violent protests that erupted last night in Hyderabad at the South Zone DCP office. Protesters there demanded immediate action against Singh and chanted the Islamist chant “Sar Tan Se Juda,” which calls for his beheading for “blasphemy” against the Prophet Muhammad.
The protesters contend that the BJP MLA insulted the Prophet Muhammad in a comedic video that he tweeted on Monday. Singh was the subject of numerous complaints alleging that he had offended the Islamists’ religious sensibilities.
Later, the Bharatiya Janata Party suspended T Raja Singh for his purportedly anti-Muslim post. Raja violated Rule XXV 10(a) of the Party constitution, which states that “Breach of discipline includes acting or carrying on propaganda against any programme or decision of the Party,” in the letter the Central Disciplinary Committee sent out, noting that his opinions were at odds with the Party’s position on a number of issues.
Nupur Sharma, a former BJP spokeswoman, was also suspended for the same reasons when a video of her comments on Prophet Muhammad during a debate went viral online. An incomplete video of Nupur Sharma’s Times Now discussion where she was defending her beliefs after a fellow panellist made fun of the Shivling unearthed at the Gyanvapi property was published by Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair. Zubair and his fans on Twitter sought assistance from Middle Eastern Muslim accounts, which intensified the conflict and caused a diplomatic nightmare for Indian posts in the Persian Gulf.
