In a significant milestone for gender equality in India, the Lok Sabha passed the Women’s Reservation Bill on Wednesday with a resounding 454 votes in favour. The bill, which had been awaited for over 25 years, is set to allocate 33% of seats to women in both the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the bill in the new Lok Sabha, with a discussion taking place on Wednesday due to an adjournment of the House. Prime Minister Modi underscored the importance of greater female representation in policy-making, emphasizing the potential for women to make significant contributions to the nation’s progress. He expressed his commitment to women’s empowerment, calling it a divine opportunity.
In his inaugural speech in the new Parliament building, the Prime Minister announced the government’s decision to enact the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, further highlighting the administration’s commitment to women’s empowerment.
The special session of Parliament, which began on September 18, is scheduled to conclude on September 22. Notably, on September 19, Indian lawmakers were relocated from the old Parliament building to the new one. Prime Minister Modi urged everyone not to forget the historical significance of the old building, now renamed “Samvidhan Sadan,” as it witnessed numerous historic decisions and moments in India’s legislative history.
