Protests erupted in various locations throughout Pakistan on Tuesday after former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan was detained while attending a corruption hearing at the Islamabad High Court. According to local media sources, PTI supporters then attacked the Pakistan Army headquarters in Rawalpindi and the Corps Commander’s mansion in Lahore, in unprecedented scenes.
Meanwhile, Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court Aamer Farooq strongly condemned the arrest that was going place on the IHC premises.
According to Dawn, Khan was arrested in connection with claims that Bahria Town gave land worth 530 million to Al-Qadir Trust, which is owned by the PTI chairman and his wife. Since his removal in April last year via a no-confidence vote, the former Prime Minister has been involved in a slew of legal proceedings. He is currently facing over 140 cases for terrorism, blasphemy, murder, assault, and incitement to violence. However, he has dismissed all of these allegations as political victimisation by the ruling coalition.
