Justice D Y Chandrachud to take oath as CJI

President Draupadi Murmu selected Justice D Y Chandrachud to be the 50th Chief Justice of India on Monday. On November 9, tweeted Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, he will take the oath of office.

Chandrachud was suggested as the next Chief Justice of India by Justice U U Lalit last week. The retirement date for Lalit is November 8. Until November 10, 2024, Justice Chandrachud will hold office for two years. Justice Y V Chandrachud, Justice Chandrachud’s father, too held the position of CJI for more than 7 years.

Justice Chandrachud, a Delhi University law graduate, earned his LL.M. and his doctorate in jurisprudence from Harvard Law School. He was appointed a Senior Advocate by the Bombay High Court in June 1998 after practising law at both the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court.
