Anurag Thakur, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, said the Union Cabinet on Wednesday authorized an investment of Rs.10,000 crore for the transformation of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway stations in New Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai into world-class stations. Earlier in the day, the Cabinet met and made the decision.
According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the architecture of these stations would blend in with the urban environment to form a seamless part of the metropolis. In the first phase, he stated, “199 stations with a footfall of 50 lakh per day are slated to be renovated.”
He added that work is now being done at 32 stations and that 47 railway stations have had their tenders released. The reconstruction of the New Delhi station is expected to be finished in three and a half years. In 2.5 years, the other two train stations will be renovated, he promised.
According to the railway minister, the plan will contain a sizable roof plaza with all of the passenger amenities in one location as well as areas for shops, cafeterias, and recreation centres. He added that there will be connections between the stations in these cities on both sides of the railroad tracks. Vaishnaw continued, “Facilities such as a food court, waiting lounge, play space for kids, and a place to trade local goods will be made accessible.”
The decision was made a few weeks after the Ministry of Railways posted on Twitter potential plans for the renovated New Delhi Railway Station with the hashtag “Marking a New Era.”
The plans depicted dome-shaped buildings with a number of towers surrounding them. The glass buildings were connected to the railway station by a number of flyovers for convenience.
