TasteAtlas, a renowned food guide, has revealed its highly-anticipated list of the top 50 desserts from around the world. And amongst the many, two popular Indian mithais have claimed spots on this list, achieving their global recognition. Rasmalai, a luscious dessert with roots in West Bengal, secured the 31st position, while Kaju Katli, an iconic Indian sweet, was ranked 41st.
Rasmalai, can be described as a rich cheesecake without a crust. The name “Ras malai” is derived from two Hindi words: “ras,” meaning juice, and “malai,” meaning cream. This dessert’s combination of delicate, spongy cheese dumplings soaked in a sweet and saffron-infused milk syrup has made it a popular treat for sweet-toothed individuals around the world. Rasmalai is especially popular during Indian festivals like Diwali and Holi.
Kaju Katli, is another Indian gem known for its exquisite taste and presentation. Adorned with an edible silver foil, this dessert symbolizes luxury and appreciation for the consumer. It is made from ground cashews and sugar, resulting in a delicious, diamond-shaped delight that melts in your mouth.
The top spot on TasteAtlas’ list was claimed by France’s classic Crepes, followed by Brazil’s Bombocado, a special coconut-flavoured pastry, which secured the second position. Peru’s Queso helado, a dessert similar to ice cream, took the third spot. And Italy’s iconic Tiramisu earned a well-deserved fourth place, doing justice to its global popularity.
France showcased its dessert expertise with two more entries in the top 10, with Creme Brulee ranking 5th and Souffle au Chocolat claiming the 9th position. Baklava, the sweet pastry known for its layers of phyllo dough, honey, and nuts, took the 27th spot. Brownies and chocolate chip cookies, rounded out the list at 49th and 50th positions, respectively.
