UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murthy took time out from their busy G20 summit schedule to explore the famous Akshardham Temple in the Indian capital.
The couple’s visit to this iconic religious and cultural landmark was a significant moment, as it marked Mr. Sunak’s first official visit to India since becoming Prime Minister.
Security measures were put in place to ensure their safety during the visit, underlining the importance of the visit for both nations.
Dressed casually for the occasion, Mr. Sunak wore trousers and a shirt, while his wife Akshata Murthy chose traditional attire. Upon their arrival at the temple, they received a warm traditional welcome.
The couple was greeted by spiritual leaders and senior figures from the Akshardham Mandir, who conveyed a special message from Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader of the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS). During their visit, they were given a detailed tour of Swaminarayan Akshardham, a sprawling 100-acre complex that showcases India’s rich cultural heritage and promotes Hindu spiritual values of faith, devotion, and harmony.
Inside the main temple complex, Mr. Sunak and Akshata Murthy paid their respects to sacred images and admired the intricate art and architecture. After offering their prayers, they proceeded to Rajghat, where they joined other international delegates in paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Indian nation.
Mr. Sunak, who takes pride in his Hindu roots, had expressed his desire to visit a temple in India during his trip. He also mentioned his plans to revisit some of their favourite Delhi restaurants, reminiscing about their previous visits.
