Sonia Gandhi granted Shashi Tharoor permission on Monday to run in the party’s presidential elections on October 17, according to sources.
Hours after the Kerala MP’s meeting with Tharoor earlier today, Gandhi gave the MP his endorsement. The Thiruvananthapuram MP had earlier praised the party’s polls and lamented Rahul Gandhi’s rejection of the position of Congress President.
The G-23 leaders, who called for an organisational change, include Shashi Tharoor. Before meeting Gandhi, Tharoor had previously supported a petition from a group of young party members calling for “positive reforms.”
In the petition, which Tharoor posted on Twitter, candidates for AICC president were asked to promise to fully follow the Udaipur Declaration if they were elected. According to the former Union minister, more than 650 people have already signed it.
The previous party president, Rahul Gandhi, has repeatedly declined to accept the position. His resignation came after the 2019 elections, a year in which PM Modi won admirably and Congress suffered a significant loss.
Even though it remained unclear and in suspense as to whether he would assume the role, six state units wished to elevate him to the top position.
Gandhi stated earlier this month that he had made his choice on whether he would accept the party presidency but did not reveal his plans amid frantic attempts and calls to persuade him to take command once more as the party president.
