Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay declared on Tuesday that he will join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), just hours after resigning as a Calcutta High Court judge. He sent his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, with copies to CJI DY Chandrachud and Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, TS Sivagnanam.
On Monday, Justice Gangopadhyay’s last working day, Room Number 17 of the Calcutta High Court witnessed emotional scenes as a huge number of lawyers and ordinary citizens gathered. Sunday, Justice Gangopadhyay announced his decision to enter politics. When asked which party he was likely to join, he cited the Congress, the Left, the BJP, and “smaller parties,” but excluded the Trinamool Congress. Justice Gangopadhyay has often lambasted the ruling TMC and its officials in judicial orders and media interviews over the last two years.
“I have said that West Bengal under the Trinamool is an empire of thieves. There is no question of joining that party. I can see that the party is gradually falling behind, breaking up…,” Justice Gangopadhyay said.
