In a significant development, the Kerala Assembly has come together to support a change in the state’s name. The Assembly members voted unanimously to rename the state from ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralam’ and has urged the Central government to make the change official, constitutionally.
The idea was brought forward by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. He believes that the name ‘Keralam’ better represents the state’s identity, especially in the Malayalam language. He stressed that this name should be used not only in Malayalam but also in all other languages.
The resolution gained the approval of both the ruling party and the opposition. This means that everyone agreed on this change without suggesting any alterations.
The history behind this change is quite interesting. Even though ‘Keralam’ is the name used in Malayalam, the state’s name remained ‘Kerala’ in other languages. Chief Minister Vijayan highlighted that this change is important to bring all languages in alignment and to showcase a unified identity for the state.
By making this change, Kerala aims to emphasise its cultural unity and linguistic harmony. The decision was made to honour the state’s rich heritage and to create a stronger sense of shared identity on a national level.
As the state moves forward with this new name, it’s expected that ‘Keralam’ will resonate better with the diverse linguistic backgrounds and contribute to a more united Kerala.
