In a symbolic move, the name card in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G20 Summit in New Delhi displayed ‘Bharat’ as he addressed world leaders. The summit saw Prime Minister Modi being identified as the leader representing ‘Bharat,’ marking a deliberate choice to embrace the constitutional name of the country.
Videos and photos circulating on social media depicted a placard with ‘Bharat’ as PM Narendra Modi delivered his inaugural address at the prestigious summit. During his speech, PM Modi highlighted that “India’s G20 Presidency has become a symbol of ‘Sabka Sath,’ inside and outside of the country. This has become the people’s G20 in India, with over 200 meetings held across the nation.”
The government’s decision to use ‘Bharat’ alongside ‘India’ in several official G20 documents was reported as a conscious choice, as stated by official sources and reported by news agency PTI.
Prior to his inaugural address, Prime Minister Modi extended a warm welcome to a multitude of world leaders, including US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, at the Bharat Mandapam, the venue of the G20 Summit.
Among the notable attendees were UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director and Chairman Kristalina Georgieva, and World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. They were among the first dignitaries to arrive at the newly constructed venue in Pragati Maidan.
Prime Minister Modi’s welcome of world leaders took place against the backdrop of a replica of the Konark Wheel, a 13th-century artifact symbolizing time, progress, and continuous change.
The decision to prominently feature ‘Bharat’ in the summit proceedings reflects India’s commitment to embracing its rich cultural and historical heritage on the global stage. The G20 Summit, hosted by India, is poised to facilitate meaningful discussions and collaborations among world leaders on critical global issues.
