Sudha Murthy and Shankar Mahadevan to shape NCERT textbook

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has formed a 19-member panel comprising specialists and scholars from diverse fields, in a bid to revolutionize educational content for students across the nation.

The panel, known as the National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC), is charged with the crucial task of developing contemporary and pertinent textbooks for classes 3 to 12.

The move comes as part of the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, seeking to align the curriculum with the evolving needs of modern education.

The NSTC will be headed by MC Pant, the Chancellor of the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), with support from co-chairpersons Sudha Murthy, Chairperson of Infosys Foundation, and acclaimed singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan. Their inclusion in the committee is expected to bring diverse perspectives and rich insights from their respective fields.

The committee’s mandate includes not only the development of textbooks but also the creation of other teaching-learning materials. To ensure the quality and relevance of these materials, the NSTC will be assisted by Curricular Area Groups (CAGs) comprising subject-matter experts. These groups will work closely with the NSTC, under the guidance of the NCERT, to create well-rounded and engaging educational resources.

The new textbooks and materials are intended to be as per the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) outlined under NEP 2020. This integration aims to provide students with a holistic and interdisciplinary learning experience, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and practical skills.

One of the highlights of the committee is its diversity, both in terms of expertise and backgrounds. Notable members include Manjul Bhargav, a professor of mathematics at Princeton University, and Sujatha Ramdorai, a renowned mathematician. The committee also features accomplished individuals such as U Vimal Kumar, a prominent badminton player, MD Srinivas, Chairperson of the Centre for Policy Studies, and Chamu Krishna Shastry, Chairperson of Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti.

This initiative comes in the wake of controversies surrounding previous revisions to NCERT textbooks. Earlier this year, concerns were raised when certain topics and portions were removed from the curriculum without full disclosure. These changes sparked allegations of ideological manipulation and prompted debates about the transparency of such modifications.

As the newly appointed NSTC sets out to create modern and relevant educational materials, it is hoped that the collaborative effort of experts from various domains will yield textbooks that inspire and empower students while addressing the challenges of today’s dynamic educational landscape.
