Yusuf Pathan, Mahua Moitra among TMC candidates for 2024 LS

Banerjee’s nephew, TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, announced the names of 42 candidates for all Bengal seats.

The Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee, has announced its candidate list for the Lok Sabha elections, which are anticipated to take place in April-May this year.

Banerjee’s nephew and TMC general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, revealed the names of 42 candidates for all seats in Bengal. Abhishek startled many when he announced the name of former cricketer Yusuf Pathan from Baharampur, a stronghold of Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

Mahua Moitra, the party’s leader, is also one of the candidates from her hometown of Krishnanagar. Banerjee and her candidates arrived at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground on Sunday afternoon, kicking off the TMC’s election campaign.

Banerjee also revealed that the party is in talks with the Samajwadi Party about contesting a Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. Among the notable candidates are Abhishek Banerjee from Diamond Harbour, expelled Lok Sabha member Mahua Moitra from Krishnanagar, Bengali cinema actor Dipak Adhikary from his customary constituency Ghatal, and former cricketer and politician Kirti Azad from Bardhaman-Durgapur. Shatrughan Sinha, a Bollywood legend, will compete from Asansol.

Before releasing the names, Abhishek criticized the Modi government at the Centre, alleging that “Modi ki guarantee” has “zero warranty”. He also referred the BJP leaders as “outsiders and anti-Bengal” who only visited the state during elections.

Banerjee further stated that the people of the state will respond appropriately to the saffron camp during the Lok Sabha elections for “withholding the state’s funds”.
