Kerala on high alert as Nipah Virus claims 2 lives in Kozhikode

In Kerala’s Kozhikode district, the number of Nipah virus cases has increased to five. A healthcare worker from a private hospital recently tested positive for the virus, adding to the concern. The State Health Department has identified 789 people who had contact with the two individuals who tragically succumbed to the infection, as well as two others who are currently receiving treatment after testing positive.

To help trace the virus’s spread, the department has released a travel history ‘route map’ for the two deceased individuals, starting from the day they first showed symptoms. In response to the outbreak, the government has imposed restrictions on large events in Kozhikode until September 24.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is expected to provide monoclonal antibodies for treating infected individuals by Thursday morning.

Kerala’s Health Minister, Veena George, revealed that the cases were linked to the Bangladesh strain of the virus. Although this strain is less contagious, it has a worrying 70% mortality rate.

According to official sources, 371 people who had contact with the first victim, a 47-year-old man from Maruthonkara in Kozhikode, are under medical observation. Additionally, 60 contacts of his nine-year-old son, who is currently being treated at a private hospital, have been traced. The health worker who tested positive was also on his contact list.

A panel of medical experts has suggested that the 47-year-old victim may be considered the index patient, from whom the others contracted the virus. The second victim came into contact with him at a private hospital in the city, where the first victim was receiving treatment. Sadly, the first patient passed away on August 30, and the second on September 11.

To manage the situation, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan held a meeting with Ministers and top government officials. Health volunteers conducted a fever survey covering 313 houses in the affected areas on Wednesday. Nine gram panchayats have been declared containment zones in the district.
